Sumo Omni
I spent many an hour of my childhood watching kick-ass cartoons like Dogtanian or the Transformers sprawled out on a home-made bean-bag. Made of corduroy and foam these soft, bulky squares were the first port of call after a hard day winding up teachers at school.
As I got older and the bean bags got ever more tired and used they became favourite sleeping places for a couple of big, smelly Labradors (the beginning of the end for any soft-furnishing). I even took one bean-bag on a trip to Morocco where it ended its days as a crash pad in the back of a mini-bus.
Recently I got to try a Sumo Omni, the 21st century update on the venerable lounging classic. And I must admit I was impressed. Rather than a simple throw-it-on-the-floor and lie on it situation the Omni lets you build the seat you want to sit on in just a few seconds. Shake it out, lay it flat and you have the classic bean-bag. Sort the mass into a great ball and just sit in the middle of it for an awesome armchair.
I even managed the perfect gamers position with the Omni acting like a great baseball mit, with head and arms popped out the top. This gives great support for your forearms whilst they hold a controller and your head is locked in position.
So what makes the Omni so unique? It's a simple formula but incredibly effective - a super-tough Ballistic nylon cover contains thousands of little white polystyrene foam balls. Their tiny size allows them to sweep around and support you where a lesser, foam-based bean-bag would just squash down like a bath sponge.
The other thing the Omni has going for it is its size - it really is big. It can swallow up six-footers without problem and by re-arranging the contents anyone can get comfortable. Simple but brilliant and very, very desirable.
